Youth Service Earth Fest celebrates Earth month through volunteer service

April is Earth month and in an effort to teach South Florida youth about conservation and stewardship, Miami-Dade Parks, and the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, will host Youth Service Earth Fest on Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Fruit & Spice Park.

Volunteers participating in this signature service day will have the opportunity to assist with various beautification and environmental stewardship projects throughout Fruit & Spice Park. Fruit and Spice park is a unique tropical botanical garden that is home to a variety of exotic fruit plants and spices. Under the direction of UF/IFAS Extension master gardeners, volunteers will work on enhancing the park’s herb and vegetable garden. They will also learn about water conservation as they decorate rain water barrels that will be installed at three different Miami-Dade Parks’ EcoAdventures™ nature centers. Other projects include tree mulching and removing weeds and invasive plant species. All volunteers will receive a light breakfast snack and lunch, and will be awarded community service hours upon completion. Miami-Dade Parks Director George Navarrete will welcome volunteers during an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. To volunteer, register at iaminvolved.org.

Miami-Dade Parks is the third largest county park system in the United States, consisting of 270 parks and 13,573 acres of land. It is one of the most unique park and recreation systems in the world.  The non-profitParks Foundation of Miami-Dade supports Miami-Dade Parks’ efforts to further develop Miami-Dade County’s world-class parks system for residents and visitors.
