What is Miami-Dade County Schools, The Hidden Truth?

The Hidden Truth is a school climate report that is being released which uncovers the truth about our Public School System

On Wednesday, September 6 at 5:30 p.m., the Power U Center for Social Change, in collaboration with local, state, and national civil rights organizations including Advancement Project, will host a unique press event and direct action releasing a new report Miami-Dade County Public Schools: The Hidden Truth. The report evaluates the District on key school climate indicators and grades the extent to which Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), nationally heralded as a model for dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline, truly supports students. The event will provide an overview of the report’s findings and feature youth recounting their first-hand experiences in Miami-Dade schools. Youth will be available for interviews.

“Right now, the conversation around the purported success of Miami schools has been dominated by adults,” said James Lopez, executive director of the Power U Center for Social Change. “This report is about uncovering the truth about how students are experiencing these same schools and what they think needs to be changed to transform them into schools that are safe and supportive.”

The press event and report release will occur immediately before MDCPS’ September school board meeting in which members will hear public testimony and vote to approve or amend the District’s proposed budget for the 2017-2018 school year.
